Great post, Dugan. Regardless of our quarry or venue, enjoying a day on the water with our favorite tackle is the essence of this thread, which is becoming
quite an epic! The more we are out there enjoying nature, the more we will be inclined to take whatever steps we can to preserve the waterways so our tackle
can continue fishing long after we are gone.

a pretty good bass over the weekend - 22" - on the Hardy Golden Prince and SA System 5 glass rod
we trudged a dry sendero in the south Texas scrub to fish broken persistent pools - they were loaded with bass while there is flow below the surface, for about 15 miles of this river, there is only continuous surface flow in monsoon years
here is the pool the big bass came from, but we really caught them - the fish above was the best fish we got to hand, but we each caught about 150 fish and broke off 2-3 fish each that were 8-10 lbs. ![]()
here is one of the prettier pools
and better photos of the reel

SPRING IS HERE! | #328 | ||
I just enjoyed a gorgeous pre-April Fool's day with my new friend Jerry Nonnemacher (superb cane rod builder from Allentown, PA) at my old friend Douglas Dear's charming Rose River Farm in Syria, Va. The day was such a joy after a bizare, southern winter...nothing but cane was fished and I ended the day with the very plump rainbow above who was brought to net with the 8' - 4 wt Model 40 Leonard, a 3" Dingley 'Perfect' and a #16 Tups Indispensable flymph (a la Pete Hidy)! Life is good! P.S. I learned to write in italic from my hero, Ernest Schwiebert. Petri heil!

Christian - Good to hear from you again! I've been trying to nail down its date but nothing in my Mills catalogs has been very definitive. The grip is
very well-ridged, the reel seat wood is white oak, not butternut. The stamp on the butt cap reads like this:
THE LEONARD ROD H. L. LEONARD ROD CO. MAKERS It's also stamped TOURNAMENT opposite the maker's mark. It weighs 3 1/2 oz exactly. I'm sure it's been refinished (by Leonard?) in the more modern honey wraps with black snakes and a black Mildrum stripper. I'd appreciate it if you'd venture a guess as to age. At any rate...it is a marvellous rod!

Spring Arrives on Fins | #337 | ||

Here we are 15 minutes from the White House on the Potomac River in Washington D.C. waters. The shad and herring, watched over by cormorants, have been
migrating up river along with stripers, while Congress and the new Administration debate important topics like bank bailouts, executive pay, and the next
budget. Caught this early hickory shad on a beaded wooly bugger attached to an ungreased 6-weight silk line on a 3 3/4" Hardy St. George large arbor reel
(courtesy of a fellow Forum member) and an old 9' Goodwin Granger 9050 Special. That equipment far outperformed a graphite rod with sink-tip line and a
shad fly, even in strong winds.
