Paul, give a shout when you get back East and maybe we can finally do the shad thing together.

Here's another from the Rappahannock, using a Pickard 8026 Guide with a 3 3/4" Hardy St. George (that winds on the correct side, RPL
).

Mr. Grouse....give me a call and we can perhaps cane some hickories together! I got six nice ones on the James on Wednesday, but last night was a bust.

S. Grouse: Nice action shot. I guess the 3 3/4" St. George is becoming the shad's worst nightmare. (As for the right-hand/left-hand thing, who was it
that said correctness is in the eye of the holder?) BTW hope you're about to release that poor fish and not chomp into it. Looks disturbingly like someone
contemplating shad sushi for lunch!

THE JAMES CHIMES IN | #345 | ||
|
I promised myself to learn to cast this lovely Shenandoah Spey by Chris Bogart...by fishing nothing else on the James this year. I believe I'm
slowly getting the feel of it! It's a wonderful rod...I'm just a slow learner! The rod is 12' for 6/7 and Chris built it...nodeless! The
reel is a 4" Farlow's BWP. Last evening I caught this one acrobatic hickory while my neighbor caught 20 on spoons. But I was content...I'd done
it "the old fashioned way"!

Wilf,
You don't want to go that far north...they're all heathens up there...mad as a box of frogs. And it's not summer yet so they are still on only 2 hours of daylight. Save travelling time and come to Wales instead... Stuart |

Top, my 2 9/16 c. 40s St. George, mounted on a 7 1/2' Goodwin Granger Special. Below, Spruce's 8' F.E. Thomas (model I don't recall) with some Frenchy-sounding reel, not a reissue. |

THardy - That is one handsome outfit...and a stunning white bass. I do like a Beaudex! Who made that fine rod?

afgantrout wrote: Thank you for the kind words. That's the first rod I made, nine years ago. It's a PHY Perfectionist clone. If you could see it in person, I'd be embarrassed. I never got the tips really straight and I was so excited about getting it done and fishing it that they are still kind of funky. But what a great taper! I very much admire your art. Thanks. |

thardy wrote: So, THARDY...I assume that's not your portrait on your avatar photo. Thanks for your kind words. I guess everyone has an ideal of how a rod and reel should compliment each other. I know I spend far too much time selecting the very reel to go with this rod. No, I don't think it's like matching shoes with a purse...but I feel it is important. BTW the white bass is on of 26 species I painted for VA Dept of F & G for their Citation program and in painting it, I learned of its piscitorial perfection in form...close to salmonids, but different!

Worrying about matching up rods with reels. I have a Sage graphite blank from 1982 that I never built up and I'm stressing about what reel to put on it.
Now that's bad! Not even a cane rod!
The whole Whitebass/Striper family is a wonderful bunch of fishes. |

Ian Tyson is some singer, I saw him in a small club last Summer and at age 74 he sings cowbot songs like Marty Robbins. Geat songwriter as well who has penned
some classics ( Someday Soon, Four Strong Winds etc.).
