Brian, it's not a Taneycomo trout........Roaring River.....in the catch and release area......it's a matter of convenience....RR is just 30 minutes
from the house......many Sunday afternoons are spent there......but I have got to find a new place.....the whole world is there....too many
people....."catfishing" for trout......out state parks are wonderful, but it seems they cater to the "meat" fisherman........it would be
great with me if the park system would go to C & R period!......they could lower their costs substansially and us fly guys would have a little more
solitude.....steve

Not a Gaula salmon...but | #426
![]() ![]()
Yesterday on Virginia's lovely South River in Waynesboro, I set out to catch some trout on my latest combo. The trout were not as cooperative as they generally are and by the end of the day, I'd taken 3 modest rainbows, about a dozen Fallfish and about two dozen of these pretty fellows known locally as 'hornyheads'. They all seemed to prefer the Tups over the Partridge and Green. On leaving, I chatted with another angler and told him I owed my alledged success to my 250 years of experience (50 for me, 100 each for the rod and reel) and I could probably throw in another 50 for the level silk line I used. The one downside was that after putting that line on this new-to-me reel, it ate about a foot of 4Xtippet and would barely turn...so I fished with about 30 feet of line looped in my left hand...worked pretty good, I must say!

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure | #427

'Bill' is my splendid Bill Harms 7.5' 4-weight and 'Ted' is my lovely Ted Godfrey 'Little Brook Trout'. I took them to experience Big Hunting Creek for our first time. Very pleasant! My host, Dan Gilman brought his spectacular Bill Taylor quad with a rattan grip and matched it with a Hardy Featherweight. The stream and its trout were beautiful...and so was our tackle!

Mayfly hatch on the Usk | #428
|
Spent a wonderful 2 hours on the Usk this afternoon, just in time for the first big mayfly hatch...so got some action for the Beaudex and the Farlows:
Four lovely wild fish, all taken 'technical casting' under bushes and overhanging trees from which the mayfly were dropping into the trout's mouths! It just doesn't get any better than that. Stuart |

afgantrout wrote: "Hornyheads"!!!!!! Michael, thank you for posting the pic of the hornyhead. That is also what we call them here in the Ole North State. Brought back a flood of memories of my little brother and I catching them with most technical equipment. A strip of sapling for the pole, a length of mono tied directly to the end of the pole, a red and white small bobber, a #10 Eagle Claw hook, and a fat ole nightcrawler. Gosh, what times we had fishing the little warm water creek below our home! What times! Bob

Mr. Gee,
I'm delighted you enjoyed the hornyhead! BTW I spent an hour yesterday with my new, most favorite reel...and with perseverance I retrieved centimeter by centimeter...all the tippet I'd allowed to get in there. It's now clicking away nicely. Arrividerci, Bubba! PS I believe it was the late Lee Wulff who frequently said:"A Hornyhead is too good a gamefish to be enjoyed only once".

Thanks . I recieved some ribbing from a guide friend for cutting the tail off and thus ending his chances at figuring out its length . For comparison my net is
27" in length .

Of course, I have to ask what rod was allowed to grace the Peerless 1.5 and that fine trout?

A Granger 8040 I fuddled together from a blank . Very nice casting rod though I have to admit I was scared for its safety a couple of times that day .
