Classic Reel With Very LITTLE Work! | #144
bulldog1935 wrote:First and foremost, thank you all for the kind comments on the St George ... she's a very special reel. Well, I didn't quite make it up to RMNP, opting instead to do some exploratory angling a bit closer to home ... and though the actual fishing never provided occasion for application of the auxiliary brake , time spent
with my first-born, the flora and the fauna (elk, deer, fox & again, my son) certainly did not disappoint -- multiply the first photo by about 20 and
you'll understand why the only things working were the camera and the scenery ...

Here are a couple of firsts: (1) 1st fish on new rod by Walter Babb and 3 3/8 Perfect. (2) 1st snake on a dry fly. Snagged unintentionally by my buddy and
released unharmed. Note the Sculpin in its mouth. Fishing was tough due to the continuing drought in the Southeast.

A Skakespeare 1899 wide and a nice halfpounder steelhead
A hardy 3 7/8 perfect with a 6 pound steelhead on the run. Not a close up, but that reel is definatly WORKING in this picture!

David-
The reel is the Hermann salmon model. This was my first opportunity to try it. I made the rod using the Dickerson 8015 Guide Special taper from "The Lovely Reed". I altered it a bit at the ferrule station to accomodate a Super Z ferrule, but was otherwise faithful to the taper. The reelseat is from Bellinger, but I made the insert and fighting butt from a piece of local walnut. -Dan Smith |

A Young, a searun cutt' and an old family rod | #157

The rod belonged to my great aunt and hadn't been strung up since the mid sixties. It's a 9' 3/2 Heddon #10 with #2 ferrule size. It had been a
long time since it was bent to a fish and although it was a slow day, this little searun cutty finally attacked the bead head muddler. The reel is a
3-1/8" unmarked Young. The bear tracks topped off a great fall day on the river in memory of my aunt Peggy. Greg
